Blog post 1 by Lee Hei Long. SID: 10615625

In response to Mark Andrejevic article written in 2008, which was titled Watching television without pity and mainly talking about the productivity of the online fans. First, lets take a look what Mark’s main arguments. In Mark’s article, he takes a positive attitude to the celebratory perspective towards interactivity. The central argument of the essay is to prove that the productivity of the online fans can help to improve the whole TV industry in different aspects. Mark mainly focused on the online forums called TWoP in which has already closed in few years ago. The article also includes many examples of different TV dramas and shows to discuss the advantages of how the online fans as a free labour can help to enhance the quality of TV industry. The phenomenon also helps the rapid growth of online economy. More importantly, he has gives some detailed refute to the doubt over the productivity of the online active free labour. The arguments of Mark is important to us because it gives us a more comprehensive view towards the second creation culture that is popular in HK in recent years.
To a large extent, I agree with what Mark had mentioned in his article and also his standpoints. The reason why I have chosen the same sides is simple. As I have noticed the same situations that took place in Hong Kong. You may wonder why I made such a statement nowadays as the fact that what TV programmes did not have such a big impact to us comparing to the past. Some may even say that people are starting to abandon TV. Yes, this may be true. However, we cannot admit that TV still remains in many of our daily lives. There are still plenty of online fans of TV shows. Similarly, like the TWoP. Paid or unpaid online fans make different discussion and criticisms towards TV shows and dramas. They make second creations with different unreasonable part in the TV shows. Sarcastically it may attract some of us back to watch the TV shows again in order to involve to various discussion online. All these kind of discussion always took place in social networking sites. Moreover we can see that TVB sometimes will responds to the online opinion to them in different programmes. This is a positive signs towards the interactivity between online fans and the producers.
Yet, a question still remains for me is that, other than relying the online productivity from fans, what can the TV industry do in order to rebuilt their dynasty in HK?
