That is no doubt that people are very easily to touch with the media under the information announced by the tech savvy method, media is more popular than the pass. Besides the TV program, people can watch different types of video in the internet through the Youtube or other websites,  people can watch the video and put the feedback under the video, people rely on the media to fulfil their curiosity, but the producer or the market need to make improve their product then rely on people feedback too, this also the central argument of the essay that the media and people are related.

In the essay, as the writer said that” by allowing fans to take on part of the work of making a show interesting for themselves and by providing instant (if not necessarily statistically representative) feedback to producers.” People rread and watch the information, video in someone company website, and the company must need to provide the better quality for the audience to watch it, besides to keep the viewers, then the company can use the viewer as the market, also the audience can keep the company producing better product, the feedback are also very precious.

I agree with the clear argument that Mark mentioned, Twop which was a website that can relate fans and the production. The feedback from the audience can enhance the quality for the TV program, also it can find out the insufficient from the company, just like the TVB, they have their own facebook fans page, myTV apps, website etc, people can reflect their opinion to each channel, TVB can get the improvement method or even only the opinion .

The only question I have is that the public space will broke the privacy from the audience? I don’t think so because the website can’t get the password from each computer, the personal photo, browsing history, name, age etc. That is no need to worry under nowadays.

Andrejevic, M. (2002). The Work of Being Watched: Interactive Media and the Exploitation of Self-Disclosure. Critical Studies in Media Communication, 19(2), 230-248.

The article of Andrejevic (2002) mentioned that our privacy is not disappeared, the accurate expression is “a shift in control over personal information from individuals to private corporations”(p.243). I agree with his argument as our daily life related to internet and technology, it gives us convenient, no matter time or costs. However, it seems we need to pay back all the price in another way, our privacy and lives in society being collect, store and manipulate.

The ‘surveillance’ used in observing worker’s training and calculated the efficient way to improve their productivity at first. And then the experimental venture of DotComGuy, lived with surveillance can attracts sponsors on his experiment. it reveals an important signal to us that being watched can make profits and people seems not really care about personal life would be exposed.

The ‘reality’ TV and VCR technology is a typical example that shows how private corporation rationalising the work of watching and being watched. TiVo provide record function and suggestions that matching their interests of what they recorded before, avoid commercial advertisements and so on. Providing convenient to attract people to use it, instead, if it can record your interests, it shows that your watching behaviours are being watched. The selling point of TiVo is making possible customised programming and products, people can customised their own television experiences but self-disclosure in the process of self-expression. And it is more widespread on the internet and social media. Such as Pinterest, people need to sign up before using, and provide what aspect you interested, in these process, it seems like what Andrejevic said “mass customisation” to create your own content, however, it is for increasing their market and productivity. In that moment, people become to free labour and it always happen in the social media, people provide their lives details to gain more followers and attraction, but in the meantime, their interest, behaviour pattern enter to the scrutiny, for both side, followers or being follow.

Our life seems cannot get rid of Internet and social media because you would also get rid of your social life in reality when you shut sown all on-line thing, if you join in, your privacy seems been shrink. I think the question is how to get the convenient of technology and meantime we can avoid surveillance.

Nowadays, mediated interactivity is more popular than the pass. Development of the Internet has changed our culture. We are not only watching the television programs on the television. Also, we can easily to find the sources of the television programs on the Internet.

According to Mark Andrejevic's "Watching Television Without Pity: The Productivity of Online Fans" (2008), he mentioned that "the way in which online viewer activity doubles as a form of value-enhancing labor for television producers in two ways: by allowing fans to take on part of the work of making a show interesting for themselves and by providing instant (if not necessarily statistically Representative) feed-back to producers." That means the audience can write their comments on the discussion area on the web-site. However, the comments of the audience may attract the programs’ production. And the audience's comments are watched by the producers and the TV series becomes their care. These series of producers are encouraged by these online fans to help them through the use of strategies, such as sending email comments and requests while they watch. This is an example of an important marketing research tool for online tools and technology producers. In addition, he explained that the television programs are like a play because the producers can use the online platform to know the audience reacts to the program as soon as possible. The producers always consider the views of the audience, therefore, the producers may make the audience optimistic changes can be in the form of, for example, a new role created by the audience or a new story line.

Wherefore, for the audience, writing the comments at the discussion area on the web-site, and the producers accept the audience's comments thereby change their TV programs. The audience will feel happy and successful. Also, the audience will more enjoy the TV programs. Consequently, the producers will produce more good TV programs in the future, while they listen to the audience's views.

Participatory Culture is Wonderful?

Blog Post 1 (by Choy Ka Wai 10615548)

The development of new media is always challenging the so-called old media which is those passive form media. The growth of the Internet and Web 2.0 made a big change of human's culture. According to Mark Andrejevic's article "Watching Television Without Pity: The Productivity of Online Fans"(2008), he mentioned that the development of television(TV programs) had been stronger than the past because of the Internet. There are more and more television shows have created official web sites to build up a discussion area for audience. Sometimes, audience's feedback may affect the production of the TV programs. This type of interactivity would be the key component of participatory culture. Here are going to discuss more about the participatory culture base on Andrejevic's (2008) article.

Andrejevic explained that TV programs just like a play because the producer can know the audience's reaction about the programs through online platform as fast as the play. The article used TelevisionWithoutPity.com (TWoP) as the main example to explain the value of audience participation of television. In the audience angle, the discussion on the online platform can give them the sense of loyalty when others also share the same point of views. When the producers adopted the viewpoint of audience from some web sites, audience will feel happy and successful because they may think that they have the power to affect the production of TV programs and help the programs become better.

Of course there are many advantages of participatory culture. Therefore, we have many fan sites of TV programs especially reality show and TV drama. However, public should pay more attention on the lack side of participatory culture. Audience's feedback become increasingly integrated into the production process in a cybernetic cycle that offers to help the producers to catch the public interest. The viewer feedbacks are valuable but the format of online platform discussion make the audience become free labor on the Net. The idea of participatory culture make viewer become the labor as something which is voluntarily given and exploited. When the producer get the ideas from the web sites for free, audience is being exploited.

All in all, participatory culture is not really that perfect. Audience will feel successful when their comments have been chosen to apply in the TV programs. But at the same time, they are being exploited. Do you think audience should feel happy or sad about that? (397 words)

Nowadays people always become fans of something, no exception for television program. It is not hard to see people discussing the television program content after they seeing it when they are in free time. Most of the people are also discussing the television program on the online forum just like Hkgolden forum or baby kingdom. Some of them are doing a live discuss on that. we can see that online fans are important for the television program.

Online forum members discuss the television program, they may not a fan of the actor or the drama show. Some of them are just trying to find out is there any ridiculous point in the program show and want to make fun with it. So they keep the focus on the television show, and it helps the program to gain their popularity with these. And they tell others about the ridiculous point to other and make others also want to watch. Maybe some of the topics in the forum are started by the television program company to take people attention to help their work.
Also, people will have some action for those ridiculous points, they will give out some secondary creation and those work can totally attract public.

Some of the online fans are the true fans of the drama and the actor, they cut the clip of the drama and replay with the people who also love their beloved. It can happen in online forum or facebook fans page. They can share the clip with others on facebook and the other will see it also, It can also help the television to gain the popularity.

From these two examples, we can see that online fans can fully help the television program company to develop their work with the online fans having discussed or sharing video clips. And the fans are very important for the television program company.

Title: The productivity of Online Fans

The higher the living standard is, the better service people want to have. In this article, the producers, audience and the fans are the main key points about which the writer wanted to talk. The webpage created by the fans, TWoP and the official webpage made by the producers are some examples of what I can find in it. A countless number of people provide prompt feedback after watching TV programs to these writers or scriptwriters in these online fan sites.

In this essay, I will argue that whether these fan sites are effectively means to air their grievances about TV programs as well as the sentiments from audiences. Some blogs, however, allow people to browse the website and leave comments only.

Not only does this article discuss how these websites help audience comment on TV programs, but it also mentions the labor power of the fans where they can rethink the plot of them. Once the fans become a spokesperson, they can encourage others to watch or join this public sphere and the discussion together with the producers.

Passive and active viewership are also discussed here where the active viewership does not only receive the message from the media, but it also can relate to the personal and social contexts.

Numerous TV program companies also create some discussion forums or official websites for improving their innovation and services. As we all know, TVB has its own discussion platform for audiences to ask questions or some comments about that program.

If some audience want to ask some questions about their programs, who can help them? Maybe they can be answered by other users but not their staff. We may think that the discussion platform becomes useless since everyone turns a blind eye to their comments.

Though the formation of these official websites does help TV producers a little bit, if they always ignore comments, then what is the significance of these platforms?

Just take, Korea programs, as an example, you will get a clear picture of it. Korea TV programmers just keep broadcasting soap operas, whereas their producers are more concerned about comments on programs. Their directors, therefore, can surly make some changes to the production from these comments, and thus lots of audience can be attracted by these significant changes, or even TV program companies can increase their income too.
