In the article ‘To
see and be seen: Celebrity Practice on Twitter” by Marwick and Boyd, Social
media technologies let people connect by creating and sharing content. This
article examines the use of Twitter by famous people to conceptualize celebrity
as a practice. Networked media is changing celebrity culture, the ways that
people relate to celebrity images, how celebrities are produced, and how
celebrity is practiced. And the gossip websites, fan sites, and blogs provide a
plethora of new locations for the circulation and creation of celebrity, moving
between user-generated content and the mainstream media.
This article that interested me greatly was
about the celebrity theories. In this article outlines three primary scholarly
definitions: (1) celebrity as a way that people are represented and talked
about; (2) a process by which a person is turned into a commodity; and (3) an
aspect of culture which is constantly being rein scribed and reformulated. In
fact, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram these social media is become a part of
our life. Therefore we can get so much information in these social media. So the
celebrity was active in these social media. In this article mentioned John
McCain,
Shaquille O'Neal and Weird Al. These famous celebrity was always update their
status in their personal social media accounts and their follower will comment
in their status hope the celebrity make some response. However, the twitter
account is not all ‘celebrity’ accounts are authored by the
celebrity in question. Therefore the celebrity company will help them to create
official account. This action should want to keep the celebrity image.
In my opinion I think the company help the
celebrity create official account resulting in some people create a fake
twitter account to post some effect the celebrity image status. It is because
the twitter account is very easy to create account and you can create your
account name to make the fake celebrity account. Another question, in this
article said somebody could buy the follower and like to increase his or her popularity.
All in all, I agree with their argument. That is the celebrity theory is very
important in the social media.
