Marwick, A. & boyd, d. (2011). To See and Be Seen: Celebrity
Practice on Twitter. Convergence: The International Journal of
Research into New Media Technologies, 17(2), 139–158.
In this reading, it was obviously about Twitter, and it also mentioned
that the relationship between the celebrity and the fans or the normal user on
Twitter and also about some hasgtag on Twitter. Social media no matter
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. all of them also can use to promote the
celebrities. Symbolic integrationists that Goffman mentioned was the self-images
produced by the conversation, the ‘impression management’ that Goffman also
mentioned was about the interaction can affect the judgment of the audiences or
the participants. (p. 144)
On the opposite side, the article also mention that Twitter may also
can produce a celebrity, as the culture of celebrity is changing, no matter the
gossip columnists or the normal users, the news values also encourage them to
focus it or not. Besides, this article also talked about the ‘illusion of
intimacy’ that mean the celebrity is close to their fans as they may upload
some tweets or photos which are about their daily life, so that the social
network including Twitter can change the celebrity culture nowadays.
In additional that, it maybe a easier way for me to elaborate as I also
have a Twitter account and I mainly follow the Japanese artists that they use
Twitter to publish the post which are about their careers and the daily life more
than Facebook, although Twitter only can allow 140 characters in one tweet it
just like a conversation that it is simply and easy to understand this create ‘illusion
of intimacy’ that the article mention so that I agree that Twitter is creating
this kind of “illusion” .
Besides, if you know what is hashtag, you may also know the use of
hashtag may make you gain more viewers, for example, in this tweet which I posted
before, it can allow more viewers as Hong Kong Tourism Board had retweet my
picture and the social media platform allow the user share, it is one of the participation
of the celebrity culture. Hashtag has change the style of the people how to use
the social platforms (hashtag in Twitter and Instagram can search by the search
engine but Facebook cannot), so that we can easily find what is the trend in
some period and Twitter also shows which hashtag is the most popular today.
So, do you agree Twitter is creating the new relationship about
idols and fans also the celebrity culture? (400words)
