Within the article “Watching Television Without Pity:
The Productivity of Online Fans” by Mark Andrejevic, I consider the
writer argues certain television audiences are becoming active participants of
new media tendency in participatory culture. The relationship of mediated
interactivity between the producer and audience which as free labor give instant
feedback to make the television programs increase content observability and
qualitative affirmation. Besides, “TelevisionWithoutPity” has
been used as case study to support his analysis about feedback mechanism
effects on the quality of television show. It reflects some passive consumers
changed to be active participants. Audiences produce useful comments or
suggestions to television producer that assists the production side don’t
necessary time-consuming on marketing survey.
The topic that interested me
greatly was about a group of online fans establish a virtual community, as represent
the relationship between producers and viewers on the free productivity of
television show. Producers maybe create new character inspired by audience who
give requests to television show of collaborative improvement. The author also
mentions an example of “Big
Brother”,
which is a reality game show provide online voting that audiences have
opportunity to decide contestant’s destiny. It was surprised me the usage of TV
show isn't for watching only, also for audiences participate into creative
work as meaningful entertainment in the neoliberal culture.
I found an article “The Role of Audience
Participation in Broadcasting” points out audience like can be
able to feel as though they’re contributing something to society so they want
to post some responses to grab others attention on different media platforms,
such as forums (Broadcasting
world
etc.), Instagram and Twitter can posted their selfie contains the brand at
background unconsciously as product promotion indirectly. However, it seems as
“snarkastic” phenomenon that audience as voluntary to produce valuable things
to entertain themselves. How do they recognize that they are not manipulated
clown by business establishment, but as the free labor who can’t obtain benefits
except they can watch the completed work only?
Therefore, the video clip of “WE READ YOUR HATE COMMENTS” produced by Smosh
Games channel represents the producer received audience comments then provided explanation and solution seriously to public. It shows the
interactivity between audience and producer to complete the creative work
together as a team. They enjoy the share control to make the video keep into
fabulous quality of visual experience which edited by themselves.
